Best FxSound Settings for Gaming

Gamers often install FxSound specifically to hear directional cues — footsteps, reloads, distant gunfire — more clearly. The default music-oriented preset isn't always ideal for this, so here's how to adjust FxSound for gaming specifically.

Start from a flatter baseline

Rather than starting from a heavy bass-boosted music preset, begin with a flatter equalizer curve. Heavy low-end emphasis can mask the mid and high-frequency cues — footsteps, glass breaking, distant gunfire — that matter most in competitive games.

Boost the upper-mid and presence range slightly

Frequencies roughly in the 2kHz–6kHz range carry a lot of the detail used for locating sounds in games. A small boost here, combined with a neutral or slightly reduced bass, often makes footsteps and directional audio easier to pinpoint without making the overall mix harsher.

Use 3D surround carefully with stereo headsets

FxSound's 3D surround widening can enhance the sense of space, but on some stereo headsets it can also make precise directional placement feel less accurate. Try toggling it on and off during a match in a game with reliable positional audio to see which setting helps you locate sounds more consistently.

Keep the dynamic range in mind for late-night sessions

If you play with headphones late at night and want to avoid sudden loud explosions while still hearing quiet footsteps, a moderate compression or "loudness leveling" type setting (where available) can even out the difference between quiet and loud moments — though this is a personal preference trade-off against dynamic impact.

Save your configuration as a custom preset

Once you find a configuration that works, save it as a custom preset if FxSound's interface allows it. This lets you switch quickly between a "gaming" profile and a "music" or "movie" profile without re-adjusting sliders every time.

Re-check settings after game audio updates

Some games update their own audio mixing in patches. If a game you regularly play receives a major audio-related update, it's worth briefly re-testing your FxSound settings, since the balance that worked before may need small adjustments afterward.
